They may be on different teams, but Jan Mass and Mathieu van der Poel share nationality, friendship and training. And the one from Jayco has revealed that his fatigue partner complains when the pace of the starts is high.
In a nice note with In de Leiderstrui, Maas was happy about the success of the Alpecin leader. “It was nice to see him win. We trained together in Spain because last year he had done well after that, ”he revealed.
Apparently, the high rhythms that Maas imposes on the starts are the “secret” and/or cabal of MVDP, who since then has maintained the routine of sharing training with his colleague.
“We ride hard and fast. He doesn’t always enjoy it and the more he complains the better he does in the following weeks. That’s why he knew that he was fit for Flanders and Roubaix, ”said the Dutchman.
“It was another good training session for Jan Maas,” Van der Poel told his friend after the Hell of the North event, confirming the Jayco man’s amusing story.
Anecdotes aside, there are plenty of examples of cyclists who fly training but don’t have what it takes to win races. And many times those riders become key pieces of other great champions.
