The Traffic Management Center (TSODD) of Moscow has posted a tender on the public procurement website to add biometric recognition to the Moscow Transport application to pay for travel by face, Kommersant reported. The tender was won by Intellectual Social Systems LLC, which belongs to the former project curator of Rosmolodezh and the commissar of the Nashi movement, Dmitry Kokh.

According to the description on the public procurement website, the user will be able to upload his photo to the transport application, with the help of which a cast of his face will be formed. The application will link a bank card to it to pay for travel.

Dmitry Kokh advised the publication to contact the TsODD for a comment. They said that thanks to the new function, passengers will receive a completely contactless method of paying for travel in public transport. The data center said that the biometric data of users is stored in a protected circuit, no one has access to them. Banks store payment data. The technology of paying for travel by the face is already being tested in the Moscow metro. The experiment began on July 31st and involves 1,000 people. They must upload their photos to the Moscow Metro application and link it to their bank card.

In June, the head of the Ministry of Transport, Vitaly Savelyev, said that by 2024 the ministry plans to introduce a facial recognition system at airports, trains and buses.

The interlocutor of the publication, familiar with the digitalization of Moscow, said that the authorities will have to first of all change the cameras on the buses, because they are outdated and their permission is not enough for face recognition. “There is also a traffic issue: data from land transport is transmitted via cellular communications. Biometrics will lead to a multiple increase in traffic, and 5G networks will be needed, ”he added.
