Frankfurt – Flexible, more flexible, Aleksei Goloborodko! In a contortion workshop, the 28-year-old Cirque du Soleil artist shows how flexibility can be properly trained. And I, the BILD reporter, really have to bend my neck for my job this time.

I am a former competitive gymnast, and at the age of 35 I keep fit with regular apparatus training. It makes my body more flexible than average – but I look pretty old against the most flexible man in the world.

At the beginning of the workshops, Aleksei shows his craziest contortions. Luckily we don’t have to do this right away. The contortionist begins gently with warm-up exercises that use different muscle groups. It’s really exhausting, I’m sweating. After 30 minutes you stretch.

“I always warm up for 45 minutes. The biggest mistake you can make is skipping this important phase in your training,” says the artist. The stretching exercises are less violent than feared: “On a pain scale of 1 to 10, you should stop at 6 and hold out for at least a minute. Don’t push too hard.”

Above all, regularity leads to progress: “Only once a week doesn’t do anything. I train 2-3 hours a day.” His coach, who monitors the exercises and helps with pressure, also plays an important role: “Anyone who wants to learn this type of acrobatics should definitely hire a coach.” Thanks to him, he also has no pain. Difficult to believe when watching Aleksei’s alien movements, which appear as if he has no bones in his body.

The Russian discovered his passion for the circus at the age of four: “I went to shows with my parents, and then I really wanted to be on these stages myself.” They sent him to a circus school, where it was quickly recognized that he had the physical requirements and the talent for the contortionist has. Many years of hard training followed. With his commitment to Cirque du Soleil, a lifelong dream came true for the acrobat.

If you want to experience Aleksei and his colleagues live, you can current tent show “Luzia” by Cirque du Soleil until July 23rd at the Frankfurt Festplatz.
