Entire families dressed up, friends loading portable coolers, children, young people, fathers, mothers and grandparents letting themselves be swept away by the music… as is tradition in Sant Antoni every last Friday of August, the Diverbeach once again broke the calm of the afternoons on the promenade for a good cause: to celebrate the end of the holidays, that the summer begins the final stretch and, what the hell, that from time to time moments of “good luck” and happiness are also appreciated. All, as usual, of the mà de l’Orquestra Di-Versiones, that since this fiesta major was invented in a bar in Torre Valentina to spend time with colleagues, they have seen how these same colleagues have not stopped growing. Yesterday according to municipal sources more than 22,000 people participated, a true madness.
From the rainiest August since 1975 that accompanied that first edition in 2014, without a stage and with the group playing on the sand, to a week of stifling heat like this one. Nine years and eight Diverbeaches have passed, the world changes, but the phenomenal sideral built by the Calongians is still in top form and encouraging more and more people. The Di-Versiones Orchestra has a record, a festival, a book and composed the anthem of the late Llagostera, and also has a major party, this one, in which for a few hours, between six in the afternoon and midnight , the world saturates so that a tsunami of happiness sweeps the beach of Sant Antoni. Each year with different color motifs. Yesterday was the orange. The Diverpeach. Because that was also the point, to make a little peach, without shame.
In the early afternoon the promenade was already an anthill. As the hour approached, parking was becoming more and more of a mission impossible even for the fittest Tom Cruise. There was barely enough space in the sand to unfold the towel. But nothing happened either, what does it matter? He started the Diverbeach with DEA, and at a quarter to eight they got there. The Di-Versiones Orchestra performed for close to two hours, with its usual show that has toured around thirty municipalities since April. You know, versions from the 70s to the present day, humor and “good rollicking” as the singer Albert Fort never gets tired of explaining. A formula for all audiences that connects with three generations and thus explains, in part, its success.
Fort also compares the Diverbeach with other summer traditions of the Costa Brava such as the havaneras of Calella or the markets held in various towns. It’s another appointment on the calendar. For the City Council, the event is also shocking. Half a thousand social, cultural and sporting activities are organized in Calonge and Sant Antoni during the summer, but none are as crowded as this one. Jordi Soler, the mayor, who already saw the birth of Diverbeach in 2014 from his position, explains that “it represented a day appearing everywhere and being able to send a message to the people that we are a town that knows how to have fun, treat people and organize important events. And also take care of the environment, because on Saturday morning the beach will be absolutely clean.” And so the afternoon passed. Between jokes, music, laughter, the beach and some swimming. From Raphael to Europe, or from ABBA to Álex and Christina, through Catalan rock, Alaska and Dinarama and José Luís Perales.
