The Parents of “the Most Hated Mom in America” Seek to Clear Their Name

George and Cindy Anthony, the parents of Florida woman Casey Anthony, have agreed to take a polygraph test in an attempt to clear their name and answer lingering questions about their involvement in the death of their granddaughter, Caylee Anthony. The results of the polygraph examination, administered by retired FBI Special Agent George Olivo, will be revealed in a two-hour special titled “Casey Anthony’s Parents: The Lie Detector Test,” set to air on both A&E and Lifetime on January 4.

The case of Caylee Anthony made international headlines in 2008 and resulted in a bitter divide within the family, as Casey Anthony was charged and later acquitted of her 2-year-old daughter’s death in 2011. Since then, there have been accusations made by Casey against her parents, leading to their decision to undergo a polygraph test on-camera.

According to Olivo, the Anthonys’ decision to come forward and take the polygraph test was driven by the need to respond to public accusations from their daughter. “You’ve got your daughter that’s accusing you of some pretty horrific things,” he said. “If they claim that they didn’t do anything, it’s like the old saying goes, you’re darned if you do and you’re darned if you don’t.”

In 2022, Casey Anthony participated in a Peacock docuseries, “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies,” in which she made accusations against her father, George Anthony, though she stopped short of alleging his direct involvement in Caylee’s death.

The case of Caylee Anthony has been riddled with numerous controversies and mysteries, with both prosecutors and defense attorneys presenting different theories about the toddler’s death. After a highly-publicized trial in 2011, Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murder charges but was convicted of lying to police.

According to Olivo, when a polygraph is done correctly, it’s “85 to 90% accurate.” The upcoming special will delve into pointed questions about the allegations made by Casey against her father, including accusations of molestation and his involvement in Caylee’s death or hiding her body.

“In the end, this is still a family,” Olivo said. ” … But some wounds are just too deep. I hope they can pick up the pieces somehow. There are still a lot of scattered pieces on the ground.”

“Casey Anthony’s Parents: The Lie Detector Test” is set to air on January 4th at 9 p.m. on A&E.
