Great outrage occurred this week in the State of Israel after yet another ridiculous sentence handed down by the court. A young man from the Bedouin diaspora, who was 17 years old at the time of the act, broke into the house and sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl while she was sleeping. This morning (Friday) for the first time since the incident, the girl’s mother spoke and revealed everything in an interview with YNET.

The mother said: “These were two years of a nightmare. That night she told me what happened. It happened near our room. She shouted ‘Daddy’, and my husband went out to look. We thought she was dreaming, but we immediately realized that it wasn’t. It was during the Corona period, so just We were more isolated at home, and we were strong enough as a family to get back to normal. It was either get stronger or fall.”

The shocking experience took the girl’s mother back many years to a shocking experience she experienced herself: “At the age of 19, I was raped by two men. When it happened I was silent. I didn’t say anything. There was no one to talk to about it. The shame… you don’t know what to do With yourself. You think you’re not worthy. The instinct is to keep quiet. But I went through a process where I realized there’s no shame.”

The mother said her daughter shows impressive mental strength. “I am proud of my daughter. I see that she gets up and moves on. She had a bat mitzvah not long ago. She had a lot of support from her father, me and the brothers and sisters. A lot of hugs. And that is the basis of all healing, love. The people we met at the police were also amazing, and the support that we received from the people of Israel, they sent her so much love that I felt that I myself had gone through a healing process. It was like a hug for me. I believe that she too will go on and get stronger.”

She did not read the attacker’s sentence. “I heard five years and that’s it. I had a hard time with the court. It’s enough that my children had to look at this evil. I’m a mother, I want to feel safe, that my children, ours, will be safe to walk around. It’s not just my case, it’s all mothers and all The children. I believe that through pain and heartbreak I can help others.”

It was important for her to clarify that she blames only the young man who attacked her daughter and the lack of governance in the area. “I am against crime, not against the Bedouins. They suffer more from crime in their society and I believe they also want change. The point is that it is a minority in Bedouin society. We always lived with the doors open, we thought everything was safe. I don’t understand why we can’t apply governance here. It is Does not make sense”.
