If there is an immortal and transversal hero, it is Zorro. We all ever dream of being or sharing adventures with that masked man who, with only a cape, a mask and his sword, puts the bad guys in their place and vindicates the good guys. And among all those who dreamed of being Zorro there was also a little boy who played with his friends in the squares of Malaga. “He shared his sense of justice, his respect for freedom and defense of the weak. Although I don’t know if I have the balls for him to defend his ideals. Well, I think so,” said that young man, who had already become a renowned actor, and who in 1998 would star in The Mask of Zorro: Antonio Banderas, This is how INFOBAE reviewed it.
The memory reader will remember that the character of Zorro was born from the inventiveness of Johnston McClulley in the novel The Curse of Capistrano, which was published as a serial in 1919. The story was so attractive that, the following year, the first film featuring it was filmed. It had as its protagonist: The Mark of Zorro. With the same title, in 1940, another version starring Tyrone Power was released. But the one that was installed forever in the memory is the 1952 version, when by the hand of Walt Disney and with Guy Williams as the protagonist, Zorro became a hero, figure and immortal character.
Later, the masked man continued to appear in comics and in different variants for the cinema; one of the most remembered was carried out by what at that time was the most beautiful man in the world: Alain Delon. In 1981, the parody, The Last Folly of Zorro with George Hamilton was a failure, perhaps because more than a hero it showed a rather pathetic man. Seventeen years later, a new version arrived, this time with Banderas, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine-Zeta Jones as protagonists, Martín Campbell in the direction and Hollywood’s King Midas, Steven Spielberg, in production.
In The Mask of Zorro (spoiler alert) the story tells that twenty years have passed since Don Diego de la Vega (Hopkins) managed to free Alta California from colonial oppression, but in exchange he lost his freedom and family. Fate will cross him with Alejandro Murieta (Banderas) a former thief who will become his successor and will live a love story with Elena (Zeta-Jones).
The project began to take shape in 1995 and it was thanks to the creative and powerful mind of Steven Spielberg. Like many boys, during his childhood, the creator of ET was a fan of the series that had Guy Williams as the protagonist. Already a Hollywood strongman, he decided to partner with Tristar to bring his hero to the screen. He got it on a budget of $35 million.
The director’s chair was offered to Robert Rodríguez, who had just directed La balada del pistolero. He started off well, but two months before filming he asked for a 10 million-plus budget and when they said no, he decided to leave. His place was taken by Martin Campbell.
