The Murcian painter and sculptor José Lucas, author of well-known murals such as that of the Chamartín railway station in Madriddied this Monday in Madrid at the age of 77, according to sources close to the artist.

José Lucas suffered a fall a few days ago that caused him serious respiratory problems “that he has not been able to overcome,” reported the City Council of Cieza (Murcia), his hometown.

Born in 1945, Lucas developed a large part of his artistic career in Madrid, where he stood out in the artistic scene of the 1970s and created one of his most emblematic works: the murals at the Chamartín station.

Trained at the School of Arts and Crafts of Murcia and at the Círculo de Bellas Artes and the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, he came into contact with abstract expressionism during a stay in Germany, which he completed with his relationship with Spanish expressionists such as Luis García-Ochoa and Francisco Mateos.

Among his pictorial works are “Architecture of smoke” and “Minotaur” and in the sculptures “Viento y Luna” and “Carroza Marte”, but his greatest recognition was found in the murals such as the Paseo de Cieza, the Regional Assembly of Murcia , the Renfe stations in Murcia and Chamartín (Madrid), and the El Pozo factory in Alhama de Murcia.

José Lucas won several national painting awards such as Cartagena (1975), Ávila (1976) and Murcia (1977).

The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, has expressed his recognition to the deceased artist and his condolences to family, friends and colleagues.

«Sad news for the Region of Murcia and for the art world in general. One of the greats is leaving us,” he published this midnight on the social network X.
