The murder of a doctor in the workplace in Kolkata causes widespread protests by women /

by times news cr

The protests, which have been going on for the past few days as well, were triggered by the brutal murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the RG Military Medical College Hospital in Kolkata last Friday.

After a 36-hour shift, the doctor had fallen asleep in the seminar room because there was nowhere else for her to rest. The next morning, colleagues found him dead with severe injuries and half naked. Police later arrested a hospital volunteer in connection with this rape and murder case. However, the local police have been heavily criticized for their negligence in the investigation. The case has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The brutal crime provoked widespread protests that culminated last night. Tens of thousands of women took part in demonstrations in the state of West Bengal, demanding justice, dignity and the freedom to work without fear of being killed or raped.

The protests were mostly peaceful except for clashes between police officers and a group of men who broke into the RG War Medical College Hospital and ransacked the emergency ward.
