The Museum of Yemen Jewry opens in Rosh Ha’Ain

A new heritage site was inaugurated: “House of the Founders”, the Museum of Yemenite Judaism in Rosh Ha’Ain, which aims to present the rich heritage of Yemenite Jewry.

The museum was established as part of a project to establish “Founder’s Houses” in development towns of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Site Preservation Council. It will be possible to be impressed by fascinating displays that reveal the story of the Aliyah from Yemen, life in Yemen before the Aliyah, the holy objects, the traditional clothes, the music of the great singers from the community and more.

The museum was established in a building that during the 1940s was part of the British Air Force base and later served as a place of reception for the immigrants who immigrated as part of Operation “On the Wings of Eagles”.

The building underwent an extensive renovation, while preserving the original appearance, and today it includes a wide variety of displays, some of them interactive, that reveal the history of the founders of Rosh Ha’Ein.

A central place is dedicated to the operation of their immigration and you can even see a model of one of the planes in which the immigrants were brought to Israel in 1949.

In addition, there is an exhibition that reveals the different and special faces of the community. In the ‘Yemen Culture Hall’ you can find, among other things, traditional clothes, jewelry as well as ‘Yemen Radio’ – a corner where visitors are invited to listen to the songs of the great singers and singers from the community: Shoshana Demari, Ofra Haza, Gali Atari, Dana International, Avihu Medina, Haim Moshe, Nissim Grama, Yoav Yitzhak, Aharon Amram, Yishai Levi, Tomer Yosef and many others.

Additional exhibits in the museum: testimonies and personal stories of the founders of Rosh Ha’Ein, the history of all the emigrants from Yemen – from 1880 onwards, sacred objects, the ‘Mori’ (teacher) and the studies in the traditional room, the story of Camp Hashad – the last stop in Yemen before immigrating to Israel, which due to the difficult conditions found In which many of the Jews who were waiting to immigrate died and more.
