The proposing legislator highlighted the development of the meat industry in that province. The resolution came with a series of demands to the Government.
On June 27, the National Assembly approved, with 118 votes, declaring the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas as the ‘meat capital’ of Ecuador. The proposal was put forward by the legislator for Manabí, Jaminton Intriago, who is part of the Social Christian Party (PSC) bench.
He justified his proposal by saying that Santo Domingo has the largest cattle trading fair in the country. Some 8,000 cattle are sold there every week and generate revenues of more than USD 5 million.
In addition, the genetics of cattle from that province register high levels of quality, which puts it at the forefront of other localities in the country, said the legislator. The Ministry of Tourism had already declared Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas as the ‘grill of Ecuador’ and that is its characteristic on the gastronomic map promoted by that State portfolio.
«21% of the country’s chicken, pork and beef production is processed in Santo Domingo. This creates jobs and boosts the economy. Jaminton Intriago, assemblyman.
The proponent acknowledged that other localities such as Chone and Esmeraldas have significant meat production and assured that this declaration does not undermine other producers.
Resolution and demands
The declaration did not come alone. The approved motion makes a series of calls and demands to the central government to boost meat production. These are the main points:
Urge the President of the Republic to present plans within three months that allow for livestock repopulation, genetic improvement and credit lines with preferential interest rates.
That the President take action to strengthen the National Institute of Agricultural Research, in order to develop research programs.
Request the Ministry of Agriculture to promote joint initiatives to boost livestock farming in Manabí and Santo Domingo, especially in the Chone canton, which is the ‘livestock capital’.
