Celebrating 80 years of the National Symphony Orchestra
This year, Guatemala celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Revolution of October 20, 1944, and, along with this event, the National Symphony Orchestra also commemorates eight decades of its existence. The OSN was founded on July 11, 1944, the date on which it officially received its current name under the government of General Federico Ponce Vaides.
Its history, however, goes back even further, to 1936, when it was created under the name of Orquesta Liberal Progresista by President Jorge Ubico Castañeda. In its first years, the group was attached to the Ministry of War, today the Ministry of National Defense, and had the function of participating in presidential tours and protocol events.
With the name change in 1944, the OSN was transferred to the General Directorate of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Education and subsequently came under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, where it is located today. On November 27, 1991, the National Symphony Orchestra of Guatemala was named “Cultural Heritage of the Nation” by Decree 80-91 of the Congress of the Republic.
