The National Union of Gold Miners of Guinea (UNOG) launched the backfilling of artisanal mines and the reforestation of 30,000 plants this Tuesday, July 16, 2024 in Siguiri.
Located 15 kilometers from the city center of Siguiri, the district of Bouré Doubaya, in the rural commune of Kintinian, served as the framework for the launch of reforestation and rehabilitation activities resulting from the promises made by UNOG to the Minister of Mines and Geology, Bouna Sylla. This initiative will make it possible to manage the period of suspension of artisanal gold mining activities throughout the national territory.
Presiding over the ceremony, the prefect of Siguiri did not fail to recall the objective of the temporary halt to gold panning.
“This is the fulfillment of a promise that the UNOG president made during the meeting with the Minister of Mines. He had promised to reforest so that this period would not be fruitless for the gold miners. We are therefore relieved to see the machines and plants that will be used to rehabilitate the impacted areas,” said Maramany Cissé.
Aware of the challenge of this project aimed at modernizing gold panning while showing another facet of the National Union of Gold Panners of Guinea beyond gold extraction, the president of the UNOG branch of Siguiri welcomed this initiative.
“It is a satisfaction to see UNOG, through President Tidjane Koita, taking a new impetus regarding reforestation and the rehabilitation of artisanal mines. And seeing that the launch took place in Siguiri is an immense joy for my team. We therefore ask for the involvement of all social classes so that this project is a success,” declared Mamadi Magassouba.
It should be recalled that 30,000 cashew trees will be planted in the prefecture of Siguiri, and the project will extend to all gold-producing prefectures, including Mandiana, Dinguiraye and Kouroussa.
