This Monday (16), the Negro River reached its lowest level in 120 years of record in Manaus (Amazonas).

This record breaks the negative mark of 2010 and confirms the 2023 drought as the most severe in a long time at this point in the Brazilian Amazon.

The measurement data from the Port of Manaus, considered in analyzes and studies by Inpa (National Research Institute of the Amazon), show that on Monday the river level was 13.59 m. On October 24, 2010, it was 13.63 m, the worst measurement recorded up to that time.

“The river will probably go down even more,” says Renato Senna, climatologist and researcher at Inpa. “According to historical data, major droughts have lasted until late October and early November.”

The historic drought has transformed the landscapes and the lives of people who depend on the river in the capital of the Amazon, resulting in a desolate scenario.
