The Dutch government has allocated € 175 million for the purchase of the painting by Rembrandt in 1636 “The Standard Bearer”, owned by the Rothschild family. The Rothschilds acquired the job in 1844. The painting is a self-portrait of the artist.

Rijksmuseum director Taco Dibbits announced on December 7 that the museum is ready to purchase the painting when it hits the market, according to the NL Times. A day later, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science announced that there is an opportunity to allocate € 150 million. It has now become known that the authorities have allocated € 175 million for the purchase, according to Reuters.

The painting, created when the artist was 30 years old, is a self-portrait in which Rembrandt portrayed himself as the standard-bearer leading the Eighty Years War. The Rothschild family has owned the work since Jacob James de Rothschild bought it in the 1840s for £ 840 at Christie’s in London.
