After the publicized separation from the father of her children, soccer player Gerard Pique, the famous singer Shakira received another bad news. A court in Spain officially ordered her trial today (Tuesday). According to the charge, the singer who was born in Colombia did not pay taxes in the amount of 14.5 million euros – as the legal documents show.

The 45-year-old singer, whose full name is Shakira Isabel of Barak Ripol, rejected a settlement offer two months ago. Because of this, she will have to stand trial in the case, and the maximum penalty for the offenses attributed to her is eight years in prison. However, in Spain it is customary to convert light prison sentences into fines and probation.

A date has not yet been set for the start of her trial. The prosecutor clarified that he will demand eight years in prison for the crimes, which were allegedly committed between 2012 and 2014. Shakira claims that during this period she lived a “nomadic life” because of work and was not a resident of Spain.

She also claimed that the accusations are “false”: according to the singer, she already paid what the Spanish tax authorities demanded of her – even before the accusation was filed. “The order to send Shakira to trial is another step in the proceedings,” her lawyers said. “The situation has not changed and everything continues as usual. We will present our written arguments at the appropriate time.”
