Prime Minister Michals took an oral oath and the ministers signed the text of the oath. Therefore, the government has started work.

It has already been announced that Rīga Kogu, with 64 votes in favor and 27 against, on Monday authorized Michal, nominated by the Reform Party, to form the new government. After that, the new cabinet of ministers was approved by the country’s president, Alars Karis.

Apart from Prime Minister Michal, the Liberal Reform Party is represented by six ministers in the new government. Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkurs, Minister of Social Protection Signe Rīsalo and Minister of Culture Heidi Purga have retained their positions from the previous government. Jurgens Ligi has taken over the position of finance minister, Joko Allendere has taken over the position of climate minister, and Erki Keldo has taken over the position of economy minister.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Marguss Cahkna and Minister of Education and Science Kristina Kallas have retained their positions from the liberal party “Estonia 200”. On the other hand, Līza Pakosta was confirmed as the Minister of Justice and Digital Technologies.

From the Social Democratic Party, Minister of Internal Affairs Lauri Lènemets, Minister of Health Rīna Sikutas, as well as Minister of Regional and Rural Affairs Pireta Hartmanes have retained their positions.

Former Tallinn vice-mayor Vladimirs Svets, who recently left the opposition Center Party and joined the Social Democratic Party, has been approved for the newly created position of Minister of Infrastructure in the Ministry of Economy.

It has already been reported that on July 16, the President of Estonia instructed Reform Party politician Michal, who was the Minister of Climate in the previous government, to form the government, while on July 15, the President accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. Kallas submitted her resignation because she has been selected as a candidate for the position of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy. Along with Kallas, the government led by her also resigned.

Negotiations on a new coalition agreement between the ruling parties – the Reform Party, the Social Democratic Party and the “Estonia 200” party were concluded on Friday. These three parties have formed a government coalition since May 2023.
