The new Kia Niro 2022: Engine and technical details revealed

by time news
Last November, Kia announced the second generation of the Kia Niro, its “green” compact recreational vehicle (C-SUV). This model was first unveiled in 2016 and was the first in the segment to offer three “green” propulsion units – a hybrid, a rechargeable-hybrid and an all-electric version. Kia now reveals first details about the propulsion unit of the hybrid version and the dimensions of the Nero.

His virtues
The new Kia Nero is based on a completely new platform, says Kia. The suspension set-up is similar to that of the retiring model: McPherson struts at the front, multi-connectors at the rear. The wheelbase of the new model now stretches over 272 cm, 2 cm more than that of the outgoing generation; Its length is 442 cm (6.5 cm longer), its width is 180.5 cm (2 cm longer), its height is 154.5 cm (same). The trunk volume to 451 liters in the hybrid version, 50 liters more than in the previous model.

Kia notes that the new Nero has a low drag coefficient of 0.29 – a handsome figure for recreational models with gasoline engines, acceptable in the hybrid context, higher than that of dedicated electric models that set themselves the goal of improving this component.

The hybrid propulsion unit of the outgoing generation finds its way into the nose of the new Nero, but according to Kia this is an updated edition. The petrol engine is the same 1.6-liter atmospheric familiar from the outgoing generation, here in an updated edition of the Hyundai-Kia ‘Smartstream’ series. Its data is almost identical to those in the previous model: 105 hp and 14.7 kg, as well as those of the electric motor that produces the same power of 43.5 hp. The combined power of the system stands at 141 hp and power is transmitted to the front wheels via a dual box -Coupler that has 6 gears. According to Kia Niro the hybrid will cover 20.8 km per liter according to the Korean standard.

The model will be offered with the option of an all-electric ride, but Kia does not specify how far and what size the battery is. It will be possible to preset beyond electric propulsion by location in pre-determined areas, such as hospitals, city centers, schools and more.

A bit of a driver environment
Beckia also reveals a few details about the impressive driver environment, and this was designed in the spirit of the new EV6 electric model. In front of the driver is a top 10-inch display that shows information about the driving components (speed, navigation) and the function of the various safety systems. The dashboard size is 10.25 inches and so is the multimedia screen, and Nero will offer rich mood lighting that allows a choice of 74 different colors. The driver environment will be offered with three color combinations to choose from.

The range of safety systems is wide and improved, according to Kia, and includes advance warning of an accident with a vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle, cross-traffic at the entrance to intersections and reversing, dead zone monitoring, lane center maintenance and deviation correction, autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, customized cruise control system , Automatic dimming and more.

The new Kia Niro will hit Korean roads as early as next month, and marketing in the rest of the world is expected later this year.
