The MEP candidates Filimon Karamitsos and Olga Nassi with a group of members of the New Left of Arta visited the People’s Market and the commercial market of the city and talked to dozens of shopkeepers ahead of the European elections.
At the meetings they presented key priorities of the New Left programme, such as combating exactitude and boosting incomes with real increases in wages and pensions, taxing wealth as a condition to ease the social majority and support the welfare state, but and the need for a meaningful housing policy. An important part of the dialogue that developed was the priority it has for the Left to get in front of a movement for peace and an end to the arms race.
It was preceded on Friday by a tour of Konitsa, with visits to the Health Center, the Police Department and the Fire Service, during which the understaffing problems and the lack of incentives to cover the organic needs in the mountainous areas were highlighted. The necessity of using well-staffed mobile health units to cover remote and inaccessible small villages was also particularly emphasized.
Afterwards, a meeting was held with the Mayor of Konitsa, Andreas Papaspyrou, the vice-mayors, members of the municipal council, the president of the local council and the employees of the town hall, in the context of which the serious problems of human resource shortages in the Local Government services, the lack of autonomous financing were raised of the municipalities, the necessity of reforming the road axes, the acute demographic problem of the region and the practice of removing critical services for citizens as well as issues related to the possibilities for more efficient and more transparent utilization of European funds with special provisions for mountainous and border municipalities . The executives and members of the New Left had the opportunity to explain the party’s proposals for substantial strengthening of Local Government with resources and powers, emphasizing the need for prioritization and special targeting for critical municipalities.
This was followed by a visit to the Forestry Office and the Public Library of Konitsa, where it was established once again the important work carried out in this cell of knowledge and preservation of the cultural heritage of the region.
