It’s just a date, and nothing will probably happen on that day, but it’s important. From January 1, 2024, Kylian Mbappé can, at his sole discretion, already commit to a club other than his current employer – Paris Saint-Germain – for the 2024-2025 season, which will begin ‘next summer.
This is not a privilege offered to a big name in world sport. With the passage into the new calendar year, the Paris Saint-Germain striker, like all professional footballers whose contract expires at the end of the season, is in fact free to sign a pre-contract with another club.
To acquire this new legal freedom, the captain of the French team, a PSG player since 2017 after his professional debut in Monaco (2015-2017), battled with his leaders. This even earned him, in the summer of 2023, a stay of a few weeks in the “loft”, this group of players under contract with Paris Saint-Germain but who, no longer part of the club’s plans, can go put their boots elsewhere – if a transfer offer satisfactory for PSG and for the player is issued by another team.
Implacable in terms of the law
To be absolutely certain of waking up, on January 1, 2024, with his destiny in his hands, Kylian Mbappé and his advice have, legally, done things in due form. Last June, at the end of the 2022-2023 season, the player informed PSG, by registered letter, that he did not intend to activate the option, appearing in his contract, allowing him to extend by one year , beyond June 2024, its commitment with Paris.
This letter, implacable in terms of the law, enraged the leaders of PSG, starting with president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, who then took the spectacular decision to remove Mbappé from the club’s first team. A few weeks later, after negotiations whose terms were never made public, the same Nasser Al-Khelaïfi announced, with a smile on his lips, the return of the star striker to the group led, since the summer of 2023, by Spanish coach Luis Enrique.

There is little doubt that it is on the financial level that the two parties found a compromise putting an end to their quarrel. In his contract, Mbappé has club loyalty bonuses. By agreeing to waive all or part of these sums, he can allow PSG to make savings to compensate for his departure. Because, in addition to the loss of his most decisive player, it is the prospect of seeing Mbappé join a big club without receiving the slightest transfer compensation which offended the Qatari owners of PSG in advance.
