The new on-call system in Budapest will start in October

From October 1, Budapest will also join the new primary care on-call system, family doctors will be on call on weekdays between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., said the national collegiate professional family doctor on the Monday morning program of the M1 channel.

Szabolcs Békássy announced: several months of experience with the new structure have been gathered in the countryside, and this new on-call system will also be launched in the capital at the beginning of October.

He emphasized: it is necessary to separate the appointment and availability time of family doctors and the time spent on call, the former still being regulated by their performance contracts with local governments. The government’s proposal is still that family doctors have afternoon appointments, this will ensure better access to primary care for the population, but this, as he said, is independent of the emergency room.

If someone has a condition that requires real urgent care, it must still be provided within the framework of rescue, which is provided by the National Ambulance Service. For such tasks that can be postponed beyond the appointment time, there will be the on-call service or the family doctor’s service beyond the appointment time.

Szabolcs Békássy touched on the fact that the professional concept calculates that the majority of the call points will be installed in the immediate vicinity of the emergency patient care departments of the hospitals, which can help the care classification of patients.

The specialist is confident that the new on-call system will enable a more rational organization of patient journeys. He said: the central dispatch number will also be available in Budapest from October 1st, the goal is to get everyone to the appropriate care center for their specific complaint.

Szabolcs Békássy of Radio Kossuth Good morning, Hungary! in his program called

the new primary care on-call system will be available in Budapest from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on weekdays, and 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays.

He added: like every new system, this one also has “childhood diseases”, but they are working to eliminate them; ongoing consultation with the ambulance service. In response to the criticisms of the Hungarian Medical Chamber, the national collegiate professional general practitioner said: the chamber’s initiatives to postpone the introduction of the system would not change the basic concept.

There is no doubt, he added, that the average age of general practitioners nationally exceeds 59 years, which poses a challenge in terms of supply, but this fact alone does not justify the reorganization of care.

He added that from October 1, the ambulance service will be responsible for the care instead of the municipalities, but the system does not prohibit the participation of external doctors. They are confident that this will create a good opportunity for young doctors to take on second jobs in the capital – due to the proximity of university clinics.
