The day after the withdrawal of Huguette Bello, president of the Reunion regional council, to be the candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP) for the post of prime minister, there is a new name on the table: that of Laurence Tubiana. The economist, former ambassador for the COP21 negotiations, in Paris in 2015, is the “personality of civil society” proposed by the Socialist Party (PS), the French Communist Party (PCF) and Les Ecologists à Dé 15 July. La France insoumise (LFI).
This episode is just the latest in a day of high tension within the NFP, with press releases, threats or ultimatums between partners. It is now clear that the left alliance, which was decided after the dissolution of the National Assembly on June 9, will survive.
From Monday morning, on BFM-TV, Manuel Bomard, LFI coordinator, “angry systematic opposition” of the PS, he asked that the NFP agree “immediately” regarding joint candidacy for the presidency of the National Assembly, the election of which is scheduled for Thursday 18 July. At 3:30 pm, the “rebels” took it again, threatening to suspend negotiations with other left-wing forces. “We will not participate in any further discussions on the formation of the government until the individual candidacy for the National Assembly is received”, confirms LFI management in a press release. Message supported by the founder of LFI, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, on the social network.
“Improving an external application”
Incidentally, LFI accuses, once again, PS of “to veto any candidature from the New Popular Front with the aim of imposing its own”. In the rest of the left, we have to think: why LFI is aligned with the position of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, who recently considered the election for the presidency of the National Assembly – and a clarification of the balance of power at the Palais -Bourbon – would it affect the profile of the government in the future?
“It is an important meeting, because if we win the perch, Emmanuel Macron will be taken at his wordestimates by Paul Vannier, MP (LFI) for Val-d’Oise. If we fail, the New Popular Front will not have a Prime Minister. » After this pressure from LFI, the representatives of the four groups of the left wing met at the National Assembly on Monday evening and accepted the principle of individual candidacy for the seat. Socialists and ecologists, who recall that they always wanted a joint candidacy for the presidency of the National Assembly, highly demanded by LFI, recognize the importance of Thursday’s election … but they do not imagine the NFP in the preferred position .
