A new Japanese study has found that the sub-variant of omicron not only is more contagious, but may also cause more severe disease.

According to the study, the strain known as BA.2 may have the ability to cause severe disease, similar to older corona variants, including the delta. But like Omicron, it seems to be able to not be really affected by the first vaccines, but only by the booster vaccines.

Also, the strain is resistant to some of the corona treatments, including the antibody “Sutervimb” which is currently used to treat omicron.

The study was published on Wednesday, and is currently awaiting peer review.

“In humans, it may be a worse virus than the BA.1 strain,” said Dr. Daniel Rhodes, who reviewed the study. “It may be more contagious and cause more serious illness.”

The study also said that the strain underwent many mutations, which makes it actually different from the original virus at the level of gamma and delta cells.
