Microsoft will stop producing video games on physical media. This was reported by Wccftech, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.
The media authors referred to a report by gaming journalist Jez Corden. The specialist linked the upcoming layoffs at Microsoft with the restriction on the release of video games for Xbox on discs. According to him, the corporation will offer only digital versions of games, and the number of physical copies will sharply decrease, which will become a trend in the market.
Corden said that Microsoft will cut 1,900 specialists. Activision Blizzard’s customer support department will suffer the most – it will be cut almost entirely – and the department that distributes physical copies of games. This may hint that in the future the corporation will stop releasing games on discs.
The specialist also recalled rumors according to which the US IT giant intends to release a set-top box in the future that does not have a disk drive. “Well, you understand in which direction Microsoft is moving,” the author concluded.
