The number of monkeypox cases in the UK continues to rise. This number is currently reported to be over a thousand. As many as 1,076 people in the country have been diagnosed with the disease as of the last 26 days.

This has been followed by high levels of monkeypox in Spain, Germany and Canada. More than 1,500 cases of monkeypox have been reported so far in eight countries in Africa.

Its impact has been confirmed in European countries such as Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, as well as Australia, Canada and the United States.

The disease is most prevalent in wildlife such as rats. They are said to be transmitted to humans. Symptoms include fever, itchy skin, and swollen lymph nodes. It can also lead to medical complications. The effect is reported to last for 2 to 4 weeks.

Of those affected in the UK, 27 were in Scotland, 5 in Northern Ireland, 9 in Wales and 1,035 in other parts of the UK. Sofia McGee, director of the UK Healthcare Institute, said the number was expected to continue to rise in the coming days and weeks.

He said large crowds should be avoided during the summer and that sexual intercourse with new people should be avoided and that any symptoms should be alerted and tested expeditiously to help prevent the spread of the virus.
