The number of people infected with the new coronavirus is increasing before the summer holidays. Experts say the “heat” and “mutation” of pressure are contributing factors.

“A primary school for older children (is happening).”

The end of the rainy season is approaching, and summer will soon be in full swing.

In the week ending July 7, the number of patients reported by 84 sentinel medical institutions in Okayama Prefecture was 5.6 per medical institution, an increase for the second consecutive week.

The number of patients reported by 47 sentinel medical institutions in Kagawa Prefecture is 6.3 per medical institution, an increase for the fourth consecutive week.

The new coronavirus looks set to prevail this summer, but why exactly? We spoke to Professor Takashi Nakano from Kawasaki Medical University, who is an expert on infectious diseases.

“I think there will be an increase in the number of people eating and talking together in closed spaces with air conditioners, it takes a lot of people (during the summer).

The strain currently prevalent is a mutant strain of the Omicron breed called “KP.3.” According to Professor Nakano, this mutant strain has the characteristic that it is “likely to be infected frequently.”

“There are some people who get it two or three times. Even if you’ve had the Omicron strain in the past, or if you’re immune to a vaccine, you can get it again and the symptoms don’t seem to be getting any better.”

“What should everyone be careful about as the summer holidays approach?”

“I feel like I have no choice but to take care of my own health.”
“I will be riding the Shinkansen from now on, and I am thinking of wearing a mask on the Shinkansen.”
“I think we should wash our children’s hands and gargle as a countermeasure.”

Professor Nakano says that in addition to taking the bare minimum measures to prevent the spread of infection, I want people to eat and rest as the weather gets warmer.

“I think it’s important to build immunity so your body doesn’t succumb to pathogens.”
