The number of people injured in the explosion at the Listvyazhnaya mine in the Kemerovo region has reached 99, Russian media reported on Wednesday, December 1, citing the Kuzbass government. 16 patients remain in hospitals, including one in serious condition. Another 60 people are being treated on an outpatient basis.

The tragedy at the Listvyazhnaya coal mine in the city of Belovo took place on the morning of November 25. The explosion and fire at a depth of 250 meters killed 51 people, including 46 miners and 5 rescuers. The day before, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that rescuers found the bodies of 18 dead miners and five rescuers, but their bodies could not be lifted due to the deteriorating situation.

At first, 52 deaths were reported, but later one rescuer was found alive and hospitalized. At the time of the tragedy, there were 285 miners in the mine.

Criminal cases on the fact of the accident

The Investigation Department of the ICR in the Kemerovo Region opened a criminal case on violation of industrial safety (part 2 of article 217 of the Criminal Code). The director of the mine, Sergei Makhrakov, his first deputy, Andrei Molostvov, and the head of the section, Sergei Gerasimenok, were detained; they were sent to a pre-trial detention center for two months.

The Investigative Committee also initiated a negligence case that caused the death of two or more persons (part 3 of Art. 293 of the Criminal Code) against the chief state inspectors of the Belovsky territorial department of the Siberian Department of Rostekhnadzor Vyacheslav Semykin and Sergei Vinokurov. They have also been detained.

After the accident at Listvyazhnaya, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation initiated checks in the remaining mines of Kuzbass. Employees of the department recorded about 450 violations related to industrial and fire safety. As a result, 180 administrative protocols were drawn up and another criminal case of negligence was initiated.
