The Organization of American States (OAS) has issued a strong statement condemning the recent raid carried out by the Ecuadorian police at the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, with the aim of arresting the former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas. This act has sparked international concern and has been described as a possible violation of international norms established in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In the words of the General Secretariat of the OAS, “it rejects any action that violates or puts at risk the inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions.” Furthermore, he expressed his solidarity with those affected by these inappropriate actions, underscoring the importance of respect for International Law in all circumstances.
The raid took place shortly after Mexico granted political asylum to Glas, who had been taking refuge in the Mexican embassy since December due to an arrest warrant issued by Ecuadorian authorities. Mexico’s position has been firm regarding respect for its sovereignty, rejecting the excessive presence of Ecuadorian police agents in the surroundings of its embassy.
