The Office of the President effectively rejected the People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon’s request for a private meeting with President Yoon Seok-yeol during the party leadership dinner on the 24th, saying, “This is a matter to be discussed separately.” Han said, “If this is difficult, we should meet as soon as possible.”
An official from the Blue House met with reporters at the Blue House in Yongsan on the afternoon of the 23rd and emphasized, “Tomorrow (dinner) should be seen as an event to encourage the new leadership.” This means that it is not a place for President Yoon to ‘meet’ with the ruling party leadership, including Representative Han.
He also drew the line on the possibility of a separate meeting with the leadership, including floor leader Choo Kyung-ho, rather than a one-on-one meeting before the dinner. The official said, “(During the dinner) it seems like discussions on current issues could come up naturally,” but added, “This dinner is more of a meeting after the party leadership is finalized.”
When asked whether this information was relayed to the party, the official said, “I don’t think it was relayed.” He added, “It’s not like the exclusive meeting has to happen tomorrow. You can think of it as something that will be discussed later.”
When asked whether the report that another representative had requested an exclusive meeting influenced the Blue House’s position, he responded, “Some media outlets are interpreting this as discord between the ruling and opposition parties, but you can see it as something that happened during the negotiation process. We are continuing to communicate and find common ground.”
Regarding this, Representative Han stated, “I saw media reports that (a private meeting) would be difficult. I did not receive anything directly (from the Office of the President).” He continued, “There are important issues that are difficult to talk about publicly, and we need to discuss them, so I requested a private meeting,” adding, “I think (a private meeting) is absolutely necessary. If this is difficult, we should meet as soon as possible.” Representative Han left the meeting without answering the question of whether he was considering not attending the dinner tomorrow.
According to the Office of the President, 16 people will attend the dinner meeting from the party, including Representative Han, Floor Leader Choo, Supreme Council members, Policy Committee Chairperson, Secretary General, Senior Deputy Floor Leader, Senior Spokesperson, Senior Floor Spokesperson, Party Leader’s Chief of Staff, and Floor Leader’s Chief of Staff. From the Office of the President, Chief of Staff Chung Jin-seok, Policy Director Sung Tae-yoon, National Security Office Director Shin Won-sik, and other key senior officials will attend.
