Soon there will be a state of emergency again in Munich. Oktoberfest begins – and with it the rush of people from all over the world.

How much does a pint of beer cost?
A quart of beer costs between 12.60 euros and 14.90 euros, with an average of 14.18 euros. That’s an average of around 6.1 percent more than in the previous year. Despite all the complaints about the expensive Oktoberfest beer: the price increase is not that strong this year. It is on par with general inflation in Germany, which was 6.1 percent as of August – and below the slightly higher increase in prices for food and catering. You also get more alcohol for your money with Oktoberfest beer – it’s a little stronger. In view of general inflation, drinking water will be available free of charge for the first time this year. A liter of table water, on the other hand, costs an average of 10.04 euros in the tents; in 2022 it was 9.67 euros.

What do you wear?
Anything you like is allowed. Scots like to come in tartan skirts, and drag queens also stroll around the grounds for Gay Sunday on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest. Hats with plush chickens remain undressable but indestructible Oktoberfest accessories. Many locals and foreign guests come in dirndls and lederhosen. Even in the post-war period, women wore dresses or costumes and men wore suits. Later, jeans and a T-shirt dominated. In the mid-1990s, the then Mayor Christian Ude (SPD) and the former Wiesn boss Gabriele Weishäupl made the costume suitable for salons and Oktoberfest celebrations.

How do you get
a place in the beer tent?
The safest way is to make a reservation in the respective tent months in advance. Now the bookable places are largely gone. But: The innkeepers are not allowed to give away all places. If you’re good on foot, rush to the tent of your choice as soon as the festival grounds open at 9 a.m. – the fastest people get the best seats. In the gray market sale, against which the innkeepers are sometimes taking legal action, some tables are still available – for thousands of euros. To make a reservation, you only need to purchase food vouchers from the hosts.

What attractions are there?
The Olympic looping roller coaster with five rings is legendary, as is the Ferris wheel. New to the festival is “Mr. Gravity”, in which ten gondolas rotate on a disc at up to 100 km/h. Of the 180 showmen’s businesses, around 90 percent have their roots in the 19th century. Some older, more comfortable rides are only available at the Oktoberfest, such as the Toboggan slide, the Devil’s Wheel or the Crinoline, named after the ladies’ crinoline. The Layerl Varieté is legendary, which celebrates “The beheading of a living person using a guillotine on an open, brightly lit stage” several times a day. This year will be the 15,000th. Beheading expected. The flea circus is also special, where fleas play football or pull a mini carousel.

How ecological is the Oktoberfest?
The innkeepers have an ambitious goal: the large festival tents should become climate-neutral within five years, if possible even as early as 2026. The innkeepers are now determining their carbon dioxide consumption in order to reduce their CO₂ footprint. Green electricity has long been used at the festival, beer mug flushing water is reused for toilets and waste is reduced. A round table meeting on the topic of sustainability met for the first time in June with representatives from the city and farmers, showmen, market traders and innkeepers. After a debate as to whether the Oktoberfest would only be possible with organic products or at least an organic quota, the Paulaner festival tent is now only offering organic chicken as a test. There should be at least one vegan dish in every tent, as well as more vegetarian dishes. Kufflers Weinzelt also wants to measure food waste.

Why does Oktoberfest take place?
mostly takes place in September?
Munich celebrated the first Oktoberfest in 1810 in the middle of October. It was the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig – later King Ludwig I – and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The highlight of the five-day celebration was a horse race on October 17th. Oktoberfest is long over today. It now starts a month earlier and ends on the first weekend in October or October 3rd. The festival had already been brought forward in the 19th century; supposedly because of the weather, which is often warm and relatively stable in September.

Where else is there Oktoberfest?
All over the world. According to estimates, there were more than 2,000 copycats before the pandemic. Many were readmitted. The most important and largest are in Blumenau, Brazil, in Cincinnati in the USA and in Qingdao in China. Munich-style celebrations are also celebrated in many German cities, such as Frankfurt, Hanover, the Rhineland and Leipzig. According to the capital portal, Berlin even has several Oktoberfests. The Vienna Wiesn has been taking place in the Prater for years (this year from September 21st to October 8th).
