In front of the police control room there was a crowd of load workers lifting tea. Immediately the papers told Kannan and Saravanan to leave and they were on security duty. There is a pesticide shop in the old building where they were standing.

The building collapsed

Suddenly the front of the first floor of that old building collapsed and fell on 2 cops who were standing below. Two people were trapped in the rubble and fought for their lives. Workers and other police nearby rushed to the scene and rescued those trapped in the rubble. Suddenly the fire brigade was informed and they rushed to the spot and sent the two trapped in the rubble to the Madurai Government Hospital for treatment.

One is a miserable death

When doctors examined him there, it was revealed that Saravanan had died on the way to the hospital.

Doctors gave first aid to Kannan, who sustained serious injuries not only to his head but also to his arms and legs. He was later admitted to another hospital for further treatment. There he is being treated intensively.

4 people including the owner were arrested

Inspector Lingapandian conducted an inquiry into the complaint. It was revealed that the collapsed building was 100 years old and was owned by Mohammad Idris, 55, of Lower Main Street. It was also revealed that the pesticide shop operating in the building was rented out by Abdul Razak (58) to Naga Shankar (51) and Subramanian (57) of Villapuram.

Following this, the police registered a case against the above 4 persons including Mohammad Idris. All four were arrested after the corporation issued a notice to demolish the building and it was revealed that they had acted in violation of it.

Saravanan’s hometown is Cholavanthan in Madurai district. He is currently staying at the Crime Branch police station near the Periyar bus stand. His father Sokkalingam also worked as a policeman. Saravanan is survived by his wife Anandi (37) and daughters Gayathri Devi (15) and Sukunadevi (13).

They are studying 10th and 8th class in a school in Ponnagaram area. Saravanan’s body was brought to his home at 2 pm after the autopsy. His wife and daughters cried when they saw his body.

DGP Tribute in person

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Police DGP Silenthrababu arrived in Madurai by plane from Chennai yesterday afternoon. He went to Saravanan’s house and paid homage to his body with a flower ring and offered condolences to the family. Minister P. Murthy, Collector Anish Shekhar, Commissioner of Police Prem Anand Sinha, Southern IG Love, Corporation Commissioner Karthikeyan, MLAs Bhuminathan, Venkatesh and others paid tributes.

Following that, Saravanan’s body was taken to Cellur Thathaneri Cemetery and cremated with state honors. It was attended by a large number of policemen, including police officers.

Lighthouse Police Station Edu Saravanan was killed in a building accident during a night patrol. We extend our deepest condolences to his family. Ettu Kannan was also injured in the accident. The Tamil Nadu First Minister has ordered to provide a relief fund of Rs 25 lakh to the family of the victim Saravanan and a government job to his wife. We thank him on behalf of the police. Rs 5 lakh has also been provided to Kannan’s family for further treatment. I pray he recovers quickly.

We have been inspecting the old buildings in Madurai and are continuing to demolish them. Beyond that this incident is ongoing. Action will be taken on behalf of the police to prevent such an incident from happening again and to find out what such buildings are and inform the Collector.
