Time.news – The oldest person in the world, the Japanese Kane Tanaka, celebrated his 119th birthday, announcing plans to extend his record for at least another year.

Kane Tanaka, who has a penchant for fizzy drinks and chocolate, celebrated yesterday with the staff of the nursing home where she is housed in Fukuoka prefecture in southwestern Japan. The Guardian reports it.

In the Guinness Book of Records Tanaka was recognized as the oldest Japanese ever in September 2020, when he reached 117 years and 261 days of age, an anniversary he celebrated with a bottle of Coca-Cola and making the sign of peace for the benefit of photographers.

Born in 1903, six months before George Orwell, in the year in which the Wright brothers made the first flight in history and the first edition of the Tour de France was held, Tanaka saw five emperors succeed each other on the Chrysanthemum Throne.

The over 100 year old, due to health restrictions placed on the coronavirus pandemic, has recently had limited contact with family members, spending time playing puzzles and board games with nursing home staff.

His grandson Eiji, aged 62, expressed to the Kyodo agency the wish to personally congratulate the grandmother as soon as possible: “I hope she stays healthy and has fun every day as she gets older.”
