The ombudsman recommended to approve the gas agreement in the Knesset, Lapid refused

by time news

Globes has learned that the legal adviser to the government, attorney Gali Beharev-Miara, recommended at the cabinet meeting last Thursday that the gas agreement with Lebanon be brought to a vote in the Knesset. According to her, in light of the circumstances of the transitional government and in light of the fact that this is an irreversible agreement, she recommends bringing the agreement for approval of the Knesset. According to Beharev-Miara, a vote by the Knesset will strengthen the government’s position against the petitions submitted against it to the High Court which are still pending.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid rejected the position of the ombudsman and decided to settle for a concession on the Knesset table without a vote. Tomorrow (Wed) the government will vote as Prime Minister Lapid’s position to settle for a concession on the Knesset table. Rabbi Miara will defend Lapid’s position if required to do so at the High Court.

The ombudsman’s recommendation comes after earlier today (Tuesday) Prime Minister Lapid announced that Israel and Lebanon had reached a “historic agreement” on the maritime border line, and that he would convene the Ministerial Committee for National Security Affairs (the Political-Security Cabinet) tomorrow, followed by a government meeting special meeting to approve the agreement. The agreement will then be placed on the Knesset table but without a vote on it. The agreement is expected to be signed by the parties the week before the elections.
