The Modus Vivendi collection, created by the collectors Fernando Garate and Estrella Gomara, is one of the most important collections of contemporary art in the Basque Country, which includes paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos. From time to time, the pieces of the collection are released to the general public, taking a two-way route: the public can enjoy the private collection, and the collector, on the other hand, can share his work, let it be seen.

It is in this dynamic that the Photomuseum of Zarauzko opened on Tuesday ‘Mysterion. The art is not where you expect it’ temporary exhibition, where about thirty works of art from the said collection are gathered. The artist and curator José Ramón Amondarain, who has already prepared exhibitions with works from the Modus Vivendi collection, has been responsible for setting up ‘Mysterion’, at the request of the collectors.

In Amondarain’s words, “the selection of works does not respond to a specific discourse structure. Just putting the works of art next to each other creates a certain formal connection, which causes each image to stop being what it is and wanted to be or something, to inform its strength, adding to the totality of the exhibition.’

The works of 27 artists are on display, including Amondarain’s. There are authors from many countries, among whom we can mention José Ramón Amondarain himself, Juan Luis Moraza, Txomin Badiola, Unai San Martin, Dario Urzay, Sergio Prego, Carlos Irijalba, Ibon Mainar or June Crespo. Along with them, you can see Wolfgang Tillmans, Thomas Ruff, Paul M. Smith, Juan Uslé, Vasco Araújo, Roland Fischer, Richard Pare, Shirin Neshat, John Baldessari, Georges Rousse, Alberto García-Alix, Leandro Feal, Miguel Río Branco, Andrés Works by Serrano, Per Barclay, Nan Goldin, Ian Wallace and Jorg Sasse. As Amondarain wrote in the introductory text, in the exhibition “unpredictable conversations and unexpected kinships are created between various authors”.

‘Mysterion. Art is not where it is expected’ is on display until October 2. The Photomuseum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00, and on Wednesdays and Fridays admission is free. On the rest of the days, the regular entrance is 6 euros and the reduced 3.

In addition to the exhibition, this Friday, August 12, the art critic Edorta Kortadi ‘Coleccionista y colección. He will present the Modus Vivendi’ lecture at the museum, at 6:00 p.m.
