As the People Power Party’s national convention is flowing into a brawl between the leading candidates, there are growing concerns that the party may be in a state of no recovery after the convention. There is criticism that the key figures who should be rebuilding the conservative party through reform are actually accelerating the party’s crisis. In particular, criticism is spreading within the party that the ruling party is narrowing its own room for maneuver as the Democratic Party of Korea, the largest opposition party, is boldly mentioning the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol, starting with Lee Jae-myung, who is running for re-election as party leader.
On the 11th, Won Hee-ryong, the leading candidate for the party leadership, posted on Facebook, targeting candidate Han Dong-hoon, “If even one of the three allegations—the Sacheon suspicion, the private opinion-forming team suspicion, and the suspicion about the recommendation of Financial Supervisory Service Chairman Kim Kyung-yool—is true, will you resign (from your candidacy)?” He then claimed, “Candidate Han, who dominated the nomination process and oversaw the general election, is avoiding verification by saying he is negative.”
Then, one candidate immediately responded through his camp, saying, “I will change the old-fashioned politics of false matadors who run away after throwing up their waste as if they were urinating on the street, together with my party comrades.” This is interpreted as highlighting the ‘public urination incident’ that candidate Won had urinated on the street 31 years ago when he was a student at the Judicial Research and Training Institute.
Candidate Won sent out four attack messages on this day alone, and Candidate Han sent out three rebuttals and counterattack messages, continuing the previous battle.
Candidate Na Kyung-won also criticized candidate Han for “interfering in party affairs” regarding the controversy over Ms. Kim Gun-hee’s text messages on Channel A’s YouTube channel “Political Signal,” saying, “She is laying the groundwork for the president’s impeachment.” Representative Na said, “The person who indicted former President Park Geun-hye was then-special prosecutor Han Dong-hoon, and asked, “Isn’t she putting the government itself in danger to save herself? Isn’t that a threat to the president (Yoon Seok-yeol)?”
On this day, after the ruling party continued its self-destructive clashes, the Democratic Party held a general meeting of its members at the National Assembly and confirmed the Yellow Envelope Act (amendment to the Labor Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act), the amendment to the Cargo Transport Business Act, the Board of Audit and Inspection Act, and the Special Act on Lease Fraud, which the ruling party opposes, as party platform bills. By this day, the Democratic Party had adopted a total of 45 bills as party platform bills, including the Special Act on the Recovery of People’s Livelihoods to provide 250,000 won to every citizen. Candidate Lee Jae-myung, who attempted to expand the moderate periphery by putting forward “Muksanism (the issue of making a living)” in his declaration of candidacy for party leadership the previous day, emphasized the election slogan “Lee Jae-myung next to the people, the Republic of Korea running again” and promised, “A Democratic Party that is ‘more competent, more innovative, and more prepared’ that will change the lives of the people.”
