Kim Min-seok, the Supreme Council member of the Democratic Party of Korea, once again brought up the ‘martial law suspicion’ on the 18th, saying, “As the psychological change of government begins, we must be wary of extreme forces driven by fear and the will to power.”
On the last day of the Chuseok holiday, Supreme Council Member Kim held a “Chuseok Public Sentiment Press Conference” at the National Assembly and asserted, “Currently, the public’s anger has reached a critical point, and we are in the ‘beginning of a psychological regime change. ’” He said, “The Chungam faction’s violation of military discipline and conspiracy to prepare for martial law are representative examples,” and “Yoon Seok-yeol’s Nazi incitement, which abuses the label of anti-state forces, is a hotbed of this.” Targeting People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, who recently criticized the suspicion of martial law as an “alien idea,” he countered, “The Yoon administration and the ruling party itself are an alien reality.” He pointed out, “In a situation where unimaginable people are appointed to public office and the president makes inflammatory remarks, martial law is not such an alien reality.”
He said that there is “a broad circumstantial consensus” regarding martial law within the Democratic Party leadership. He said, “The martial law issue is relatively clearly coming to a conclusion,” and “The first military organization since the ‘Hanahoe’, the Chungam faction, has been clearly pointed out, and its violation of military discipline has also been pointed out, and it has also been confirmed that, aside from the ruling party’s denials, there is a severe lack of institutional mechanisms to prevent this.”
A member of the Democratic Party’s leadership also explained, “Raising suspicions about martial law is a warning and preventive measure to ensure that something like the drafting of martial law documents during the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye does not happen again,” adding, “The intention is to listen to the voices of the people who are anxious that ‘anything can happen’ in a government with an approval rating in the 20% range.”
The Democratic Party is also said to be operating a martial law response team within the party called “Spring of Seoul.” A floor official explained, “It is a team led by Supreme Council member Kim, who has been leading the suspicion of martial law, and lawmakers Kim Byung-joo and Park Sun-won.”
Supreme Council Member Kim said, “We have decided to root out the Chungam faction’s violations of military discipline, dismiss their representative figures, and ensure that martial law is not actually a coup d’état for the survival of the regime,” adding, “We will soon present a slightly more advanced position in order to avoid a repeat of the past where the spring of Seoul was trampled.”
The ruling party criticized this, saying, “We need to stop the wasteful political strife and focus on making a living.” Park Jun-tae, the floor spokesperson, said, “(Supreme Council Member Kim) once again spewed out provocative remarks, talking about a psychological change of government and martial law,” and “We warn that the endless repetition of special prosecution, martial law, and impeachment is running against the path of public sentiment.”
