“I’m learning to live with this.” It is the story of Ana, her fictitious name, who agrees to serve us on the condition that she distort her voice and not show her face. She will do it herself, she assures her, when there is a sentence against the doctor. It’s been almost 2 years since her first breast operationbut it is still difficult for him to look in the mirror: “I prefer practically not to look at myself today,” he says.

Ana decided to undergo surgery after breastfeeding her children and seeing her chest drooping: “I just wanted to improve my appearance, it gave me a lot of complex to look at myself”, he explains to laSexta. He went to the clinic of Dr. Javier Mato Ansorena, a well-known plastic surgeon with more than 20 years of experience, and underwent surgery on August 19, 2021, a date that he remembers perfectly, because he assures that his ordeal began there.

“It never went well, since I left the operating room and got up from anesthesia, everything was wrong. I already woke up bleeding, with tremendous pain. His left breast was very swollen and he was in a lot of pain. At dawn I lost consciousness,” says Ana.

Not even, he says, he was fit to have the operation, because he has a coagulation problem. “The anesthesia report was unfit to operatebut she took it to him and he told her that he was going to operate on me.” For this reason, she entered the operating room fearfully: “I already entered with fear.”

Everything got worse my chest was still swollen and I was in excruciating pain. “I spent fifteen whole days without sleeping a single night, I slept standing up, sitting on the chair, because there was no way to alleviate this pain.”

He underwent surgery again on September 7: “The doctor explained to me that what he did was remove the implant, remove it and clean it again. And this time he did it with a stapler instead of stitches.”

He went through the operating room of Doctor Javier Mato two more times, 4 in total, that they were not able to subside the pains and the inflammation of the implant, he assures. A “black hole” formed where he says the prosthesis came out. Until he finally decided to go to another hospital, that of Puerta de Hierro in Majadahonda, where he underwent an emergency operation and removed the prosthesis due to the “infectious risk that continuing to maintain it would entail.”

The last operation that Ana has undergone it has been a breast reconstruction for 9 hours. Doctors have used part of the back muscle to perform the reconstruction. The woman has sued Dr. Mato for a crime of injury. Ask to have your license revokedso that “he doesn’t hurt any more women”.

The surgeon will have to declare himself under investigation on May 17, after the investigating court number 14 in Madrid commissioned a report from an independent forensic doctor. For the patient’s lawyer, Emilia Zaballos, the doctor’s treatment was not adequate: “Dreadful postoperative period, there is a lack of attentionthere are very large infections, it ignores…”, and assures that they have contacted the most affected law firm.

The expert, in his conclusions, affirms that “the surgeon Javier Mato performed multiple medical acts that I consider were not appropriate to medical practice in this area, from the forensic medical point of view”. laSexta has had access to that report that the parties already have.

The doctor’s version

laSexta has also spoken with Doctor Javier Mato, who has agreed to conduct an interview to show his version of what happened with the patient. The doctor has been “surprised”because he says that he has never had a lawsuit of this type, but he also claims to be “calm” by his way of proceeding with the patient.

He ensures that the patient has sickle cell anemia (her red blood cells live 10 days instead of 120) and that makes it easier to bleed. “They were informed and a double informed consent was given. The patient accepted it, understood it, and accepted that she might need a transfusion.” She denies that the anesthetist recommended not to do the operation: “It could be operated because all the parameters were normal, I have not violated nor would I ever violate the opinion of an anesthetist or the medical praxis involved in operating a patient if she does not have all the necessary conditions”.

In addition, he assures that he followed up on the patient almost daily: “I have visited the patient for 29 days, which are recorded in the history and I spoke almost daily with her. Plus I’ve always been open to it. It is absolutely false that there has been no follow-up,” she stated.

Thus, she denies that she was discharged with internal bleeding: “What she has is a bruise. She bleeds, she bruises, the bruise is drained. As it was not reabsorbed, the prosthesis was removed and a new one was placed.. But after 20 days he bled again and decided to go to Puerta de Hierro “.

In addition, it justifies that he could not attend her in person because he was outside Madrid. “The day she had her bleeding, 20 days after the last surgery, I could not attend to her because she was in Seville, but If he had waited until the next day, he would have been delighted. Because she is a strong woman and she has resisted all this well”. She also ends by remembering that “surgeries can be between 10 or 20% of bleeding complications. Sometimes it is solved with 1, 2 or 3 surgeries”. The important thing, he assures, is “to do them well and be behind her all the time”.

Doctor Javier Mato is summoned to declare as investigated on May 17.
