At the non-profit organization Blesk writes about in the Srdce pro vaj project, Mrs. Hana started working as a coordinator right after college. “I like the work, I find it very meaningful,” she told Bleska at one of the meetings at the Jasmín Alzheimer Home facility in Prague’s Bohnice.

The aim of the meetings, which are already attended by over 200 groups in the Czech Republic, is to support the meeting of people of different age groups. “For the elderly, it is really valuable that someone hugs them, caresses them, sits on their lap. Although they are not alone in their homes, their loneliness is sometimes great.” described Kateřina Jirglová, director of the organization.

As the age of parenthood shifts, some children of mothers have the opportunity to meet their grandparents’ generation for the first time. According to Hana Pospíchalová, the meeting program is always unique. “Every time we adapt it to both the capabilities of specific seniors and the capabilities of children,” explains.

Sometimes they create art pieces together, other times they sing, sometimes they even exercise or dance, and they also bake or cook. “Not everyone has to be in a good mood at the beginning of the meeting. But I would say that everyone has more energy after it, there is almost always a smile,” says the coordinator. It is good if the meeting has its regularity. “Usually everyone is friends. Every senior is waiting for their Janička, Kája or Filipek, and on the contrary, the children know that they are going to see Grandma Eva,” adds Hana.

What’s going on?

“We support regular meetings and help create space for mutual communication between different generations and active sharing of time, energy, experience and knowledge,” says Kateřina Jirglová, why do they prepare mutual meetings. They are a maximum of one hour long and take place mainly once every three to four weeks. The Mezi námi organization is also behind the Přečti program, where seniors go to kindergartens to read fairy tales.

Solitude or loneliness?

These are similar words, but they mean something completely different. There is a distinct difference between solitude and loneliness that many people do not realize.

■ Solitude is usually a free choice, an escape from the everyday hustle and bustle, when a person wants to gain strength, think without interruption.

■ Loneliness, on the other hand, is a feeling that can affect us even when we are surrounded by other people. It is a reaction to missing relationships, one’s own family, close friends, comrades… It manifests itself in anxiety and can significantly affect physical health as well.
