On the fact of the incident, a criminal case was initiated on the grounds of a crime under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (the provision of services that do not meet the requirements of the safety of life and health of the consumer, which inadvertently entailed the death of two or more persons), added to the Investigative Committee.

The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Kabardino-Balkaria previously reported that a group of 19 climbers on Elbrus at an altitude of 5400 m on September 23 asked for help during the ascent due to worsening weather. A search and rescue operation began that evening. During it, gusts of wind on Elbrus reached 40-70 m / s, sleet was falling, the temperature dropped to -20 degrees, visibility was no more than one meter.

The weather began to deteriorate even when the tourists were climbing the mountain, which is why four of the 23 who left the route abandoned the route. The blizzard began at about 14.00 Moscow time. The climbers began to descend the mountain and split up according to the decision of the guides. The Ministry of Emergency Situations managed to save 14 people, five climbers were killed. 11 victims were taken to the republican clinical hospital in Nalchik.
