OnePlus is booming.
The Chinese company has lost co-founder Carl B. In 2020, it had a tumultuous merger with Oppo over the past year. No one outside the company knows what the future of OnePlus will look like, but its latest smartphone, the OnePlus 10 Pro, appears to exemplify what the new era of OnePlus will look like.
OnePlus is part of a larger consortium of smartphone companies under the BBK umbrella. Just like the way General Motors deals with many car companies, all BBK brands choose the same parts and make similar products, but they target different markets. OnePlus’s sister companies BBK, Oppo, Vivo, and Realme are headquartered in China, and iQOO is focused on India. OnePlus was a western division of BBK. The corresponding emerging countries one plus one for America and Europe made a lot of sense. China, India and the United States are the group’s three largest smartphone markets.
Now that the Oppo connection has taken place, it’s hard to say that OnePlus is still focused on the West. Introducing the OnePlus 10 Pro three months ago in China and just coming to the American coast. Even after this delay, the device will not launch in the US with all the features.

BBK already has three China-focused brands, so China’s preference for OnePlus could mean a slight pullback from the US market. Oppo’s connection also feels like a rejection of OnePlus’ original strategy. OnePlus was once enough to be a separate entity under BBK, but now it is not.
The merger of OnePlus and Oppo also creates a bad and uncertain future for OnePlus. OnePlus and Oppo both have their own Android themes. OnePlus has traditionally stuck close to the stock Android design and added extra features (although over time the company has moved away from that strategy). Oppo’s Color OS, like many Chinese Android variants, is the envy of Apple and looks like a fake iOS version.
