The owner of those green eyes that rocked the world’s conscience through the cover of National Geographic decades ago is now in Italy. Italy captures Afghan woman Sharbat Gula, who drew the world’s attention to Afghan refugees

In 1984, Steve McCurry was photographed on the cover of National Geographic Magazine. Sharbat was 12 years old at the time. The picture was taken from a refugee camp in Pakistan. The 12-year-old was one of the few Afghans who sought refuge after the 1979 Soviet occupation.

They were deported to Afghanistan in 2016 after being found living in Pakistan using fake identity documents. They were later granted a house in Kabul by the Afghan government.

Italy says Sharbat has been seeking help to leave the country since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. An NGO intervened to grant Sharbat asylum in Italy.

Italy says it has sheltered more than 5,000 Afghans since the Taliban took power.
