The Palestinian Authority stops broadcasting Al Jazeera and freezes its operations

by times news cr

In a surprising move, the Palestinian Authority announced on Wednesday that it would stop broadcasting Al Jazeera satellite channel and freeze all of its work in the Palestinian territories.

This decision came against the backdrop of the channel’s coverage of the current events in the Jenin camp, which the authority described as “inflammatory” and “misleading.”

The competent Palestinian ministerial committee confirmed that the decision came as a result of “Al Jazeera’s violation of the laws and regulations in force in Palestine,” noting that the freeze will continue until the channel’s “legal status” is corrected.

For its part, Hamas strongly denounced the decision, considering it a “flagrant violation of media freedom” and “oppressive behavior aimed at gagging voices.”

It is noteworthy that this decision comes in light of the escalation of tension between the Palestinian Authority and the media, against the backdrop of the military campaign launched by the security services in the Jenin camp.

Al Jazeera has been subjected to a widespread incitement and distortion campaign in recent days, which included preventing it from field coverage in the northern West Bank, and threatening its correspondents with physical harm.

It is noteworthy that the Israeli ban on Al Jazeera in Ramallah ended last December 22, after it was extended twice.

This development raises questions about the future of media freedom in Palestine, in light of the escalation of political and security tensions.
