The 105th National Sports Festival will be held for 7 days from the 11th to the 17th throughout Gyeongnam, including the main host city, Gimhae City. At this National Sports Festival, 28,153 athletes, including 40 of the 46 medalists from the 2024 Paris Olympics, will compete in 49 sports to compete. Gyeongnam Province and Gimhae City are in the midst of final preparations to host a successful competition under the slogan ‘Korea Running Again with Gyeongnam’.

This year’s competition will feature Taegeuk warriors who kept people awake at dawn during the Paris Olympics this summer. In archery, archers who have won all five archery gold medals at the Paris Olympics will participate as representatives of their respective provinces and cities. Im Si-hyun (Seoul), Nam Su-hyun (Jeonnam), and Jeon Hoon-yeong (Incheon) contributed to the Korean women’s archery team’s 10th consecutive Olympic team victory, as well as Kim Woo-jin (Chungbuk), Kim Je-deok (Gyeongbuk), and Lee Woo-seok (Gyeonggi), who became the first men’s archers to win three gold medals in archery history. In shooting, Oh Ye-jin (Jeju), who won the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol, along with Ban Hyo-jin (Daegu), Yang Ji-in (Seoul), and Kim Ye-ji (Jeonbuk) are on the hunt for gold. Gyeongnam Province and Gimhae City are determined to create a successful ‘cultural and sports festival’ featuring sports, culture, art, and tourism. Gimhae City, which hosts the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field competitions, completed the entire main stadium facilities, which began construction in November 2019, in June of this year. In line with the Sports Festival, the ‘Gimhae City Kim Young-won Museum of Art’ will also be temporarily opened in front of the stadium, one year before its official opening next year. Artist Kim Young-won, who graduated from Gimhae Hanul Middle and High School, is the sculptor of the King Sejong the Great statue in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, and the circular frame of the King Sejong the Great statue in Gwanghwamun was installed in front of the museum. The art museum, where special exhibitions will be held during the National Sports Festival, has four floors and a total floor area of 5,590 m2, and is expected to be a complex cultural space where sports and art can be enjoyed at the same time.
From the 16th to the 20th of this month, various cultural events will be held in Gimhae, including the ‘2024 World Heritage Gaya Cultural Festival’ commemorating the 1st anniversary of the Gaya Ancient Tombs being listed as a World Heritage Site. After the National Sports Festival, the 44th National Sports Festival for the Disabled will be held throughout Gyeongnam for 6 days from the 25th to the 30th.
Gyeongnam Province and each city and county plan to deploy volunteers and supporters at each stadium to ensure the convenience and safety of participating athletes and spectators. Gyeongsangnam-do Governor Park Wan-soo said, “We will do our best to make this National Sports Festival, held in Gyeongnam for the first time in 14 years since 2010, a high-quality event.” Gimhae Mayor Hong Tae-yong said, “I hope many people will visit Gimhae, the ‘2000 Historic and Cultural City’ that will enrich this fall with sports and culture.”
