The Paseo Nuevo Crossing, which will take place on August 15 as part of San Sebastian’s Semana Grande, will allow the use of neoprene “exceptionally”. Fortuna, the event’s organizing club, has made this decision before the appearance of Portuguese caravels in San Sebastián waters. Aitor Burgoa explains that, as an “exceptional measure”, it will be allowed to swim with neoprene, long swimsuits or lycras for greater peace of mind for the participants. Since the beginning of July there have been several days in which the presence of these false jellyfish that cause stings that can be very painful has been detected, so to avoid major scares, the Fortuna club has taken several measures, including the use of neoprene . Participants must know that the classification will not take into account the use or not of neoprene and that it will not alter the score for the Gipuzkoa Long Distance League.
Despite the presence of the ‘Portuguese caravels’, from the club they explain that the boat that cleans the bay will make an extra pass through the route before the two crossings, both for children and adults. In addition, there will be up to six boats touring the area and canoeists and paddle surf boards that will complete the security measures.
Burgoa also points out that the presence of ‘caravels’ is usually more frequent on windy days and at high tide and that a day “with little waves and no wind” is expected for next Tuesday. In addition, the Paseo Nuevo Crossing will take place at low tide.
At the moment there are almost 400 people registered in the adult test that will start at 12 noon. The route begins at Zurriola beach and ends at La Concha after completing a distance of 2,959 meters. An hour before, at 11 o’clock, the start of the children’s test will take place from the stairs of the Náutico. Participants will travel a distance of 650 meters until they reach the beach. Registration is open until this Friday at noon.
