The film by director Tran Anh Hung was selected from a list of five feature films, including the last Palme d’Or at Cannes, Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet.

The passion of Dodin Bouffant by Tran Anh Hung, winner of the Best Director Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, has been chosen to represent France at the Oscars, the National Cinematography Center announced on Thursday. In theaters on November 8, it was selected from a list of five feature films, including the last Palme d’Or at Cannes, Anatomy of a fall by Justine Triet, following a commission between producers, international sellers and the American distributors of each pre-selected film.

The preselection expected in December

The passion of Dodin Bouffant, adapted from a 1920 Swiss novel, follows the duo formed at the end of the 19th century by the gastronome Dodin (Benoît Magimel) and the cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche), united by a personal and culinary complicity. The next Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 10, 2024 in Los Angeles.

Previously, a preselection of 15 international films will be revealed on December 21, 2023, before the five finalist films on January 23, 2024. Last year, the film Saint-Omer, by director Alice Diop, was chosen to represent France at the Oscars. The last French film to win the Oscar for Best International Film was Indochina by Régis Wargnier in 1993.
