Hungary was the first in the European Union to introduce animal welfare support for beekeepers, which farmers requested after 890,000 bee colonies. Minister of Agriculture István Nagy drew attention to the fact that beekeeping cannot be seen only as an economic activity, because its primary purpose is not to sell honey, but to ensure pollination. The maintenance of biological diversity and a safe food supply are unthinkable without bees. The head of the ministry also touched on the fact that beekeeping is one of the smallest but also the most important sectors of agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture supports the maintenance of healthy bee colonies with all possible means. In the first round, the Hungarian State Treasury will start paying more than 3,000 beekeepers, worth almost HUF 1 billion. István Nagy highlighted that, in addition to advocating for the cleaning of the EU honey market, the Ministry of Agriculture provides special assistance to beekeeping in the support period of the Common Agricultural Policy until 2027, as well as in the national support system.
