Why does hair fall more at the end of summer?

At the end of summer, people may notice increased hair loss. According to the pharmacist, this may be due to seasonal changes and the natural cycle of hair growth.

“The hair growth cycle is divided into several different phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transition) and telogen (resting) phases. At the end of summer, many face the telogen phase, when the hair is “resting” and preparing to fall out. During this period, the hair follicle is inactive and the hair remains attached to the scalp, but does not grow. Within 2-3 months, after the end of the telogen phase, the hair falls out and a new hair takes its place, restarting the entire growth cycle,” says pharmacist E. Ramaškienė.

According to the pharmacist, during the telogen phase, about 50-100 hairs fall naturally per day. However, she notes that sometimes more hair loss can be triggered by other reasons. It can be stress, hormonal changes, anemia, thyroid diseases, lack of certain substances in the body or even inappropriate hair care products.

How to take care of the health of your hair if it falls out a lot?

If you notice that your hair is falling out more than usual, the pharmacist advises you to first consult a doctor or dermatologist, who will determine the exact cause of the hair loss and get the right treatment.

“It’s important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet that is high in protein, iron, zinc and vitamins, especially biotin and vitamin D. Also try scalp massages to improve blood circulation and stimulate hair follicles.” In addition, avoid excessive styling of hair with heat and chemicals, which can further weaken the hair,” advises pharmacist E. Ramaškienė.

What ingredients should be avoided in hair products?

When we are faced with hair loss, it is very important to pay attention to the composition of hair care products. The right products can help strengthen hair and promote hair growth, while the wrong ones can only worsen the health of thinning hair.

“First of all, when choosing hair products, avoid sulfates. They enhance the lather of the shampoo, but dry out the scalp.

Meanwhile, parabens, synthetic fragrances and alcohol can cause skin irritation and hormonal disturbances. And of course, avoid silicones in the ingredients. Although they can give the hair a short-term smoothness and shine, in the long run they begin to accumulate on the hair and weigh it down,” says E. Ramaškienė.

Ingredients to look for in hair products

Biotin. It strengthens the hair and promotes its growth.

Keratin. It is the main component of hair that helps to strengthen and restore damaged hair.

Argan oil. Moisturizes and nourishes hair, gives it shine and elasticity.

Zinc pyrithione. Reduces scalp irritation and dandruff, which can contribute to hair loss.
