At least 96 people died in the fires that ravaged Maui, an island in the Hawaiian archipelago, according to a new report announced by the authorities on the evening of Sunday August 13. “We are prepared for many tragic stories”Governor Josh Green told CBS Mornings. “They’ll probably find ten to twenty people a day, until they’re done. And it will probably take ten days. »

On Tuesday, August 8, the fire destroyed almost every building in the centuries-old town of Lahaina. The flames were 85% contained in the town and 60% inland.

On Saturday, rescue teams had covered only 3% of the search area. Twenty dogs and dozens of people make their way through the burnt-out neighborhoods, searching cars and charred homes for the dead. It is already the deadliest wildfire in the United States for more than a century.
