A butcher was killed while trying to butcher a pig at a Hong Kong slaughterhouse. The 61-year-old butcher, who worked at the Sheng Shui slaughterhouse on the outskirts of the city, was knocked to the ground by the pig he was wrestling with, police told CNN.

The butcher was about to kill the pig – and had already stunned it with a stun gun – but then the pig regained consciousness and knocked it down, police said. Apparently the butcher was thrown to the ground and hit by the long butcher’s knife – and bled to death.

The butcher’s colleague found him unconscious with a knife in his hand and a wound on his left leg. He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

The police said that the cause of death has not yet been determined. The city’s Ministry of Labor announced that it had opened an investigation. “The Ministry of Labor is saddened by the man’s death and expresses its deepest sympathy to his family,” the statement said.

“We will complete the investigation as soon as possible to find out the cause of the accident, and we will take action in accordance with the law if any violation of the occupational safety legislation is discovered,” said the department spokesman.

According to the suspicions, the place was not conducted according to all the required safety and caution rules. The city’s food and environmental hygiene department, which manages farm animal slaughterhouses, also expressed its condolences to the butcher’s family.
