It is well known that chronic child malnutrition (DCI) is multifactorial, that is, it has several factors that influence a baby to suffer from it, which is why it will mark their entire life at all levels: health and cognitive, which makes other aspects that are difficult to reflect on their quality of life, in other words, it is the piped water and ‘the other troubles’ of the DCI.

The lack of information and awareness about how harmful DCI is has meant that, in the words of Jorge Yépez, manager of World Vision projects in the Sierra, the figures at the level of indigenous communities are alarming because they are high percentages. For this reason, coordination with other entities is important, to bring the information to the most distant communities and make them aware of the packages, services and access to the vouchers.

However, piped water and “the other problems” of the DCI regarding access to safe water and sewerage, is one of the fundamental pillars to combat it, given that in many of the communities, not going very far, in the rural parishes of Riobamba consume piped water. In the same way, Cristina Cucurí, leader of the Health area of the Confederation of the Chimborazo Indigenous Movement (Comich) questions the other actions if this basic service is not guaranteed.
Proposals. From this social organization, in the dialogue tables that arose after the June 2022 strike, they proposed alternatives such as: allocating a “specific budget for indigenous peoples within the general state budget and passing it on to the municipalities, was not accepted.” Cucurí said; in addition to other approaches such as establishing public policies for the control of super-processed foods or the purchase of food from communities for social programs. “The government does not listen and does not attend, (…) they manage with a single vision.”
Difficulty. Another point to consider is the stock of medicines that are in medical centers to care for pregnant women and infants, in this sense, Toa Tenesaca, district director of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of 4 cantons in the province, he said that this is a problem that comes from the suppliers of supplies and medicines, being a lag of the Covid-19 pandemic and that it is also a point that they denounce Cucurí.
Coordination. Being a problem caused by several edges, in addition to coordination with other state portfolios, it is also the responsibility of the academy, thus, Yépez invited universities, polytechnics and institutes to collaborate with the research to evaluate how the strategies and projects work implemented and see what the progress is, remembering that the results are seen in the long term. Also, they extended the invitation for the sectional governments to allocate a budget. Thus, Estefania Camelos, director of Social Management of the Municipality, said that they need a baseline to make decisions and not just carry out patch actions.
